He raised his right hand at 7:40 in the morning and I held it together until we got to the parking lot. Then I did not.

Gate B12. He hugged his sister last and did not look back on purpose, because he told me later that if he looked back he would not have gotten on the plane.

Ninety seconds. He said he was fine four times and then asked about the dog. I could hear someone counting down behind him. I have thought about those ninety seconds more than I have thought about almost anything.

We found him in a formation of four hundred people wearing identical uniforms in about two seconds. His dad spotted him first. He looked taller. Everyone says that and I did not believe it until it was mine.

Combat training first, then six months of school. He called it the easiest hard thing he has ever done.

Six months to the day since he shipped. He said it was automatic and not worth mentioning, which is how I knew to mention it to everyone.

First place that was actually his. He sent a picture of the room before he unpacked anything and I have never been so proud of an empty room.

He sent eleven photos of aircraft and none of himself, which tells you everything about how the day went.

Nobody took a picture. He told me on a Tuesday and went back to what he was doing.

He mentioned it at the end of a phone call like he was telling me the weather. I made him go back to the beginning and say the whole thing again.

Different kind of goodbye than the airport. Quieter. He is not the same kid who could not look back at Gate B12.

Twenty-seven months from the parking lot where I cried.
